"An Apple A Week" in EIS

On 13th April 2011, Wednesday, parents and students were greeted by a table full of apples at the main foyer. Many of them approached the table and happily picked up an apple, some started munching on it immediately. While a few little ones take some persuading to pick up and apple, citing that they do not like apples.

In order to encourage all students to eat apples, as it is a very good source of vitamin, and possess high water content. The various constituents of an apple also help in preventing many other sicknesses, including cancer. The principal, Mr. John Last shared at the morning assembly on the benefits of apples; and informed the students that every "Wednesday is Apple Day" in EIS. All students will be given an apple on Wednesday, which they can eat during the break or lunch time. The students listened attentively and were amazed at so many benefits of an apple can do, and why the quote of "An apple a day keeps the doctor away". They were excited and raised questions at the end of the assembly. Some parents also attended the assembly, and expressed that they are glad with this initiative, as this is good for their children.

Mr Ng Boon Yew, chairman of the School, who raised this initiative, joined the staff members in distributing the apples to the students during the break time. The students were happily telling him how much they loved apples. Mr Ng said, "The objective of this initiative is to enhance an environment to encourage our students in healthy eating. The benefits of apples are varied and it is important to cultivate a good eating habit when young, especially on food that will build up a strong body and a bright mind".

Well, all staff members and students can now look forward to enjoy different variety of apples every week. We had China Fuji apple in this launch, and next week, South African apple will be the fruit for the week. After all, there are 7,500 varieties of apples produced in the world!
